Most of Libya’s water is well water, and it is far from uniform: a well at 3,000 ppm is completely different from one at 12,000, and a well containing silica is different from one with iron or high hardness. That is why a well-water desalination system can’t be chosen from a catalog — it has to be chosen from a water analysis.

What the Water Analysis Tells Us

Total dissolved solids (TDS) set the pressure, membrane type and recovery ratio. Hardness, calcium and sulfates set the scaling risk. Silica sets a ceiling on recovery. Iron, manganese and suspended solids determine the pretreatment stages. And bacteria determine the disinfection program. These five numbers are the whole design.

Typical Treatment Stages

Sand filters to remove suspended solids, carbon filters to remove chlorine and organic matter, 5-micron cartridge filtration, antiscalant dosing, a high-pressure pump, membrane pressure vessels, then pH adjustment and disinfection. An iron-removal or pre-softening stage may be added depending on the analysis.

Choosing the Right Chemical Inhibitor

This decision determines the life of your membranes: ALS 710 for low-salinity water with a light salt load, ALS 720 for well water — the most in-demand product in Libya — and ALS 2000S when silica scaling is the problem. We calculate the exact dosage from your water analysis free of charge.

Warning Signs That Need Prompt Action

Production dropping while pressure stays the same, higher pressure needed for the same output, rising product-water salinity, or an increase in differential pressure between the inlet and outlet of a pressure vessel. These are symptoms of fouling or scaling, and treating them with timely chemical cleaning is far cheaper than replacing the membranes.
